Fort Chipewyan First Nation is located on the western shores of Lake Athabasca, 277 km north of Fort McMurray. Isolated by nature, the community can only be accessed by plane or boat during the summer and by road only in the winter.

Established as a trading post in 1788 by The North West Company, Fort Chipewyan First Nation is the oldest settlement in Alberta, with over 230 years of rich history. The hamlet has a population is of 981 community members, made up mostly of Mikisew Cree First Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and Fort Chipewyan Métis, per the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo site.
